So Ty what’s your opinion on how Howard the Duck should look? Everyone’s been playing pretty fast and loose with it ever since he had a regular series. I’m kinda hoping now that Disney owns him he can go back to his earlier Donaldesque look before Disney forced marvel to make changes like sticking pants on him.
We all tend to imprint on the things we like at the time we discover liking them, so I’ll forever see Howard as the Frank Brunner version, since that was the first version I grew to love. I’ll give Colan his due for following that design (in his own style) quite well, which means I consider Colan an equally seminal artist for the look. We’re all allowed to let our own flourishes and linework creep in, but the basic proportions, design and look is best done in its classic form. Howard was INTENDED to be a creature of parody and satire, he SHOULD look a little like Donald/Daffy/Dirty duck, that’s the point.
Though, I will add this:
I really didn’t like the look that Bobillo gave the duck in the first couple of issues of our miniseries together (that wasn’t a mandated change, as was rumoured, merely something Juan Bobillo did ’cause he liked to redesign characters. He did it to She Hulk, Thing, Man-Thing, and a whole bunch of characters, but there was a rumour going around that he “had” to do it to Howard. He didn’t.) Anyway…I was going to say, I didn’t like it at first, but by issue 3 or 4 he’d warmed me up to it. He softened it a bit, and I grew to expect it, I guess, so I may be one of the few who ended up kind of liking it. I still don’t prefer it to the classic version. My other Howard artist, Roger Langridge, did a magnificent job with the look of Howard. I would have died to have Roger do our book.
