Pre-Con Sketchcover Commissions 2016

MattTheRadarTech_TyTempleton

I generally only do commissions on-site at conventions but after a number of requests, I did some in advance last year. I was pleased at the results (I like working at home in my drawing chair!) so I’ll be doing it again this year. At the moment, I’m limiting this to sketchcovers. As long as a convention is still listed, I’ll be taking commission requests for it but I am limiting numbers for each con.

Ty the Guy OUT!

Classes, Commissions and Christmas

Ty got his last set of pages into his Marvel editor, he’s in the middle of his teaching week, and I’m about to compile the list of commissions he’s going to be working on…

If YOU would like a sketchbook commission, please read the details in the post from last week, Sketch Cover Commissions, and email Ty at tybunny AT gmail DOT com.

This sketchbook was done for The Hero Initiative, for auction.

And…for those of you who have been asking about Ty’s upcoming classes–all the details about COMIC BOOK BOOTCAMP PART ONE and his completely brand-new-never-been-taught-before-oh-boy-he-can-hardly-wait HEADS, HANDS AND FACES are on Ty Templeton’s Comic Book Bootcamp site.

And…no, we’re not yet doing a Digital Coloring course, but we DO have a One-Day Workshop RENDERING WITH MARKERS, in which animator/illustrator/webcomic artist Meg Kearney will teach you how to use copics and other markers to colour your comics/pinups. You’ll learn to choose colours, to mix them, how to layer them and more. The information on that course is also over at Comic Book Bootcamp. You can pay at the class, but we do need to know if you’re planning to attend so the instructor will have enough sets of markers for each participant.

This illustration was drawn and coloured by instructor Meg Kearney, using copics.

Sketch Cover Commissions!

Chibi Wolverine

Ty has been asked a few times about doing commissions, and generally says no. But after posting some of the sketch covers he’s done recently, he was asked if he’d make it possible for out-of-town fans to get one…  As he was giving it some thought, he got to do a bunch for a one-day Toronto comic convention and enjoyed it enough that he decided–yes. Yes, he will!

L'il Spidey and L'il JJ

Okay, this is NOT a sketch cover. But it could have been!

Email Ty at tybunny AT gmail DOT com, if you would like a sketch cover. Please list your name, mailing address, and which blank sketch cover you would like. We have access to Batman, Deadpool, Thor, Uncanny Avengers, All New Xmen, and Fantastic Four (to the best of my knowledge). You can request characters, situation, etc. and Ty will let you know if he’s able to accommodate you.

**NEW**–I’ve checked and we also have access to The Hulk, Daredevil, The Defenders, Scarlet Spider, and Wolverine blank sketch covers.

Joker with a gun

Covers will be done in pencil, ink, archival quality markers, Prismacolours…more or less whatever Ty has to hand. They’ll be black and white, with some greytones and occasionally with red marker/ink.

The New Harley Costume. As much as I love this character, I don't love the new costume, but what's more fun than a thirty pound whoopie cushion? (I had reference for this costume, provided by the fan. I'm not THAT good at working from memory).

A familiar idea that a fan asked me to reproduce for him. Yes, it's flipped over...again that was a request. I haven't drawn a Dark Claw cover yet that's not based on an existing cover, since the official cover was taken from a B:TAS promotional poster.

Ty is charging $45/Cdn for these covers (that will include the cost of the book which we purchase from our LCS). That’s for a maximum of two characters–if you ask for something complicated or with lots of characters, he may quote you a higher price. Ask for a quote for a full cover wrap.

Shipping will be  $4/Cdn shipping and handling to addresses in Canada; $5/Cdn shipping and handling to addresses in the USA.  (Anywhere else, email and we’ll figure it out and get back to you!) When Ty has confirmed with you that he’ll do the sketch cover, we’ll send you a PayPal Invoice. Books will be shipped in a comic bag between two backing boards, in a bubble-wrap envelope.

**NEW**  (AND…if you want to have your cover submitted to CGC, we actually have the ability to do that through a recognised representative. Let us know when you email, please. We would find out through the rep what extra costs and time that would add on to the commission)

Woke up and Drew for the King and for HERO

Jack Kirby, controlling the universe with a pencil.

Back on August 28 (Kirby’s Birthday, and inter-galactic holiday) the fine and dandy folks at Hero Initiative worked with Kirby’s family to make the day about raising money to support comics creators in need. Hero asked artists to “wake up and draw” something to do with Jolly Jack, as a birthday card to the King, and as a piece of quickie artwork that can be auctioned off to raise funds for those creators who need Hero Initiative’s help.

I love to throw my two cents into Hero Initiative whenever I can–and when I heard about the campaign, I jumped in with a Kirby drawing of my own.

Here’s my woke-up-and-drew sketch of Bashful Ben sucking back on his beloved cheroot…’cause if you’re paying tribute to Jack, it should at least smell like Cuba’s on fire.

The blurry-eyed morning doodle is up for auction on Comicartfans. There are lots and lots of other sketches by lots of wonderful generous creators who rolled out of bed and drew before they’d even properly woken up! Check ’em all out! The bidding ends on Wednesday October 16. Give money to Hero Inititiave and take home a piece of art drawn by one of us in our underwear before our morning coffee.

And here’s your BONUS Kirby Sketch Moment:

The rarely seen Jack Kirby sketch of what Doctor Doom REALLY looked like under the mask. Stan had other ideas, but Jack believed it was a really teeny scar.

Sketchbooks! We got Sketchbooks! Yay!

Last Friday, the school I teach at (Toronto Cartoonists Workshop) had an open house for students to come meet the instructors – which include the tremendously talented Leonard Kirk, Dave Ross, and Eric Kim amongst others.

A big part of what I teach at the school involves the rough work of comics, the layout, the thumbnail, the sketched figure on the page, and I wanted to have something to show to students that involved sketch work and ideas in progress, so they can see the more candid side of an artists life.

To that end I edited together some warm-up drawings, some rough work, some scribbles and doodles and bears (oh my!) from from a small sampling of my sketchbooks, and put them into a never-before-seen 48 page collection.

We printed up a small box of ’em to sell at the open house, and did a lovely brisk business, thank you very much…but we’ve got a handful left over.

It looks like this, with a wraparound cover.

A few of you asked me to make the book available on the blog here, and that’s what I’m doing today, but to be brutally honest, I’m not sure what the methods involved will be…Paypal?  Barter?  A pound of flesh?  I’m fairly sure we’re asking twenty dollars for the book, but my wife Keiren is by FAR, the better person to ask these vulgar details of.

I’m assuming Keiren will pop on the blog in a moment and supply some of these details below. **  If you’re reading this before she’s come on to finish this blog post, please come back in an hour or two, and it’ll all be solved.  I’m off to my bed.

**(send an email to tybunny@gmail.com, with your mailing address–books are $20/Cdn plus shipping. We’ll email you shipping costs, confirm purchase, send you a PayPal invoice).

Ty the Guy OUT!

Here now, your BONUS sketchbook moment.

I'm fairly sure his legs are broken.

———————————————————————————————-

Don’t forget to pick up Mad Magazine this week:

Including a few pages featuring Spider-Man by Ty the Guy.

Ty Templeton’s Sketchbook! Yay!!

Ty had this idea that he was going to have lots of free time once he finished up his last assignment–ha! He forgot that it’s “that” month. He’d started drawing up a great Bun Toon for last Saturday but he had to finish work on the sketchbook he’s having printed up, so he posted a sequel to Son of Bun Toons instead (and there’s more! Taylor had a lot of comic book ideas in him at the time…these days, he’s much more about the video games).

But the good news is that Ty finished all the work he needed to do putting together pages for the sketchbook, and I finally finished all the work I needed to do prepping it for print.

And all for what? For this Friday December 9! Toronto Cartoonists Workshop is hosting a Faculty Art Show for its very own staff members. Ty will be there, with Leonard Kirk, Dave Ross, and Eric Kim. The guys will have artwork for show and sale, and will be answering questions about their upcoming classes.

587A College Street (at Clinton), 7-11pm. $4 suggested donation ($$ go to the Toronto Public Library), and a cash bar.

(I’ll be the woman at Ty’s table–stop by and say hello!)

Oh, we could be Heroes…Just for one bid.

Well, that opening David Bowie pun gives away my age, doesn’t it? (For you youngsters in the crowd, David Bowie was in a band called Tin Machine, go ask your mom.)

Now this:

A couple of weeks back, I was showing off a delightful gig I’d gotten, where I got to ink a cover for the Hero Initiative Avengers 100 project, inking over pencils by….ROY THOMAS.

Roy Thomas?

Yes, Roy Thomas.  The legendary Marvel editor, Conan writer, Avengers creator, and perpetual fanboy penciled his first ever Marvel cover for this project and I got to ink it, and it’s finally up for auction on eBay HERE.

Go bid on the cover, please and thank you.  The proceeds go to help out comic creators in desperate time, such as Gene Colan, Russ Heath and other living legends who need a hero in their lives when they run into disastrous health problems and  medical bills.

Forget about my participation, you could be the first fan on Earth to have an original Roy Thomas Avengers cover.  Talk about unique!  Rare!  One-of-a-kind!  Other synonyms for singular objects!

Ty the Guy OUT!

…and I remember to add prices…

Probably time for another cup of coffee…but first, the prices.

So…both pages are 11″ x 17″ on illustration board,  pencilled by Mike Parobeck, inked by Ty Templeton, check payment and shipping information, and if you would like a page, email us at tytempletonart@gmail.com.

and next, Justice League Quarterly #5, page 11 of Story #2 $350/USD.

New Mike Parobeck Pages

I got a couple of scans out of Ty this afternoon…he’s up to his neck with the usual deadlines (he has a script he’s desperately trying to get finished but got pushed aside by two days of teaching; deciding to write one tribute and write/pencil/ink and letter a second one to Harvey Pekar; and having to spend a tiny bit of time acknowledging the family when we got back from a brief vacation yesterday).

He hasn’t answered my queries as to price yet (I’m actually emailing him as he sits in his studio in the basement! I’m only two floors up! But, he’s locked his door and is “incommunicado” at the moment, as he tries to get some writing done) so I’ll that information when I get it.  But if you’re interested in these pages, you can check out the pricing and shipping info, and email me/us/him at tytempletonart@gmail.com. I’ll let you know the price, and you can decide if you’re still interested…  First come, first served…

That’s it for now…

I’m off to flat some pages for some other crazy artist…

Keiren

New Pages…Seriously.

It’s been a very, very, very long time since I posted any new pages. We’ve been busy rearranging the house, creating a work room, and an area to store all of Ty’s pages. Ty even took a couple of days to sort through a bunch of the pages and organize them. When he first did so he kept bringing pages to show me and announcing, “Wow, I have a lot more good stuff left than I thought!” (He even managed to find his Tailgunner Jo pages which he’d been asked about for quite some time)

Well, that was then…and with artists, what they said and felt on Monday is not what they say and feel on Tuesday, because everything that was amazing on Monday is absolute CRAP on Tuesday and they can’t believe that you think anyone would want to look at it. Not that I’m quoting or anything!

But, I’ve managed to get  TWO (2) whole pages outta the Guy…

These are from the banned Elseworlds special much discussed here and elsewhere…

11″ x 17″, on board, pencilled and inked by Ty Templeton  $300/USD.  If you want ’em, see here for pricing and shipping info, then send an email to tytempletonart@gmail.com.
