Secret Rebirth of the Legacy Empire! YAY!

Oh, Alt Bunnies.  Will I ever get tired of marketing you?

According to my calendar, it’s way past Spring.

Thank gosh this sort of exploitative, hollow, cynical exercise only exists in satire.

Obviously I have to apologise for ever creating Ortiz, the pool boy.  Here he is, in his THIRD appearance, before I knew ethnic stereotyping was grossly offensive.  This appeared during the brief period that the bunny had died and was replaced by a minor support character to build readership.

Ty the Guy OUT.

It goes without saying how much Adam West impacted my life.  I was EXACTLY the right age to become a lifelong fan when Batman come into our living room in 1966.  I remember the Adam West style Batman and Robin costumes my mother sewed for my brother and me when the show was still on the air.  I remember how excited I was to grow out of the Robin costume and finally fit into the Batman suit so I could be the Caped Crusader for Halloween in 1970.  It’s no coincidence that the lion’s share of my work for DC Comics takes place in Gotham City, from the animated Batman series, to the recent Batman 66 series, starring Adam West himself, it’s always my happiest place to be with Batman.

Thanks for the recent animated movies, and “Back to the Batcave” and Family Guy.  Thanks for the years of unbridled joy.

Thanks.

I sketch Adam West style Batman covers at conventions ALL the time.  It’s likely the most common request I get.  Here’s a few of them from the last year or so… I’m sure there will be many more–

This is, maybe, my favourite portrait I ever did of Adam West’s Batman.  It’s hard to see in this image, but this drawing is on the back of a playing card, a fan brought to the table, and is only about three inches tall.

I am Bunny.  Hear me ROAR.

As promised last week…I’m back with more to say about something.

bros before superheroes websize

It’s really not fair.

Don’t think we didn’t notice Harley was the only good thing in Suicide Squad, and Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman was the only good thing in The Dark Knight Winds Down.

This is a conspiracy, to push male dominated super-hero movies aside in favour of these female friendly movies Hollywood makes every thirty years.

I, for one, am not putting up with it.

After two or three more trips to the theatre to see Wonder Woman a few more times, I’m boycotting the film until it comes out on Blue Ray.

Who’s with me?

Ty the Guy OUT!

Wonder Woman is one of my favourite characters to draw on sketch covers for conventions…here’s a couple of recent ones that turned out somewhat un-awful.

A moment of reflection, please…

memorial day hope

Next weekend, when Diana’s adventure opens, and we find out if hope triumphs over experience, I’ll be in Niagara Falls for a convention, but I’ll try to get out to the movies and report back as soon as I can.

I figure after thirty-eight bombs in a row, Warner Brothers is due for a good one.

Ty the Guy OUT!

I have a TEEENY bit of connection to this new Wonder Woman movie, I did a quick promotional film for the Cineplex chain, here in Canada.  Unfortunate movie goers have been trapped in a theatre with my face fifty feet high, for the last month or so…this is what they were forced to watch.

And now, your BONUS Bun Toon for the week.

Scum and Villainy Bun Toons! BOO!

Bwah-hah-hah, I said, while rubbing my hands together.

It’s been a fun week for American politics.  Whether or not you support Trump, it’s hard not to notice that he’s cavorted into a buzz saw in the last few days.  Russian collusion, obstruction of justice, lying to the press, eating steak with ketchup…it’s all too heinous to believe Trump is a regular old villain….

This is YOUR chance to turn the whole meshuga into a metaphor I can wrap my teeth around.  Please vote for…

We’ll be tabulating votes until he’s impeached…I have money on his not lasting until Christmas.

Ty the Guy OUT!

My first thought was the Ventriloquist…

13v

But the President’s eloquent statement:  “Puppet? No puppet!  You’re the puppet!” rendered this idea moot.

This is not my first time turning Trump into a comic book villain.  Below is a convention sketch I did (at the fan’s suggestion) right after Trump won the election late last year.

And I’m hardly the first one to notice the Trump/Luthor connection…

But again, one of them is actually smart, and both are actually fictional.

I am in Ottawa Bun Toon…

….And cannot come to the web.

Last weekend I was in Regina, Saskatchewan, and this weekend I’m in Ottawa, Ontario/Quebec for another convention.  Canada  has conventions TOO!

Here’s what happened to me the LAST time I went up to Ottawa for the weekend.

That last part is a fib.  I did, in fact, yell a warning at Chris Claremont about the bus.  I felt it was my civic duty.  It’s not my fault he ignored me.

Ty the Guy OUT!

Next week, after two conventions in a row absent from this desk, I will return to the Bun Toon LIVE show, with new adventures, fun stories, recipes, puzzles for the kids and advice for the lovelorn.

I give and I give.  And what do I get for it?

Fame and fortune, I suppose.

I promise you, don’t look up underwater chess porn.  You don’t want to see it. Rule 34 always applies.

Sure, it starts off innocently enough with mermaids and the like…but once those knights start jumping.  Hoo boy.

Rule 34 applies to pretty well everything except for bunny rabbits.  Those fluffy bags of Easter joy are simply too adorable to make salacious.

This was the naughtiest thing I could find for a google search under “rule 34 bunnies”, believe me, I tried.

We’ll get to the cheesesteaks a little later.

This sort of thing is happening more and more nowadays.

Okay, now we can talk about the famous sandwiches.

We were in Philadelphia,  so naturally we asked about where we should we go to have a really good Philly Cheesesteak.  The choice is between “Geno’s” and “Pat’s” and we were told by one of our cab drivers that he preferred “Geno’s” because they “really load on the liquid wiz”.

Well, we never got to either Geno’s or Pat’s, but I did get a cheesesteak, and yes, they load on the liquid wiz.

It’s something of a catchphrase for the city.

easter-2015

I’m going to mention that THIS particular Easter marks a different sort of resurrection around my house.  It’s the second anniversary of my triple-death and triple-recovery from a heart attack.  That awful night, I had dined on Kentucky Fried Chicken for what might have turned out to be my last meal…

cbaa0ba34811da82b85648a1c4639c87

Oddly enough, this is the MOST requested meal for the condemned on their last night on Death Row.  Seriously.

Since a terrible diet and sedentary lifestyle was ultimately what did me in, I now exercise five days a week and eat KFC only ONE day a year.

Can you guess which day?

While you guys will be eating some sort of holiday feast, I’ll be chowing down on the worst of the worst junk food in a giant “screw you” to the heart attack.  Tomorrow I’m back to celery and peppers.  Tonight, I dine like someone trapped in a bus depot!

I Can Finally Announce It! YAY!

bunny yellow logo

I’ve been dropping hints at the last two conventions I attended (at my panels and at my booth) that I’ve been given a once-in-a-lifetime gig, rebooting one of the most important “Golden Age” characters in comics.

Now I can tell you.

It’s arguably the MOST important character in all of comics’ history, the one that started it all.

The Yellow Kid.

976776-main

Yup.

The first comic strip character in history is finally getting some attention in this land where comics are finally king.  Not only a comic book relaunch from IDW, but a Hollywood relaunch as well, with a major motion picture due out this August.

yellow kid poster

Back in the waning days of the 19th Century, a cartoonist named R. F. Outcault single-handedly invented the comic strip with a series of continuous stories told in illustrated form.  The series was called “Hogan’s Alley”, and it featured a precocious Asian fellow, charmingly named “The Yellow Kid”, who literally wore his thoughts on his sleeve.

outcault_yellowkid

Here the “Kid” is seen hanging around with Outcault’s other major comic strip creation, “Buster Brown”.

The strip ran for years in New York, it even created the first copyright and intellectual property lawsuit about a pop-culture character when competing newspapers used teh character without permission.  It’s where the term “yellow journalism” comes from.

But now he’s coming back as a major Warner Brothers film, a WB animated TV series, and a comic book miniseries from IDW.

00 yellow kid turns

I haven’t really started yet, but I’ll be writing and providing covers for the series, with a fairly new artist named Pavel Martin providing the interiors for the first three issues at least.  Pavel’s an ex-bootcamper student of mine I recommended for the project and I’m thrilled to be working with him professionally.  I think he’s really ready.

00 yellow kid designs 2

Some of Pavel’s early sketches.  The skateboard wasn’t our idea, that comes from the TV people, he’s going to have a skateboard on the show…. so you have to forgive us for that.

I’ll post new artwork and the cover for issue #1 as soon as I’ve finished it.  It’s pencilled and inked, but I’m in the middle of colouring it right now.  You’re going to love it.

00 yellow kid full body turns

After a hundred and twenty years, it’s about time!

After working on characters like Batman, The Simpsons and the Avengers, it’s really an honour to be working on the character that literally started it all.

I won’t let you guys, or R. F. Outcault’s legions of fans down.  I promise.
