Tomorrow…The Joe Shuster Awards!

joe_schuster_awards

Tomorrow will be the 10th year that The Joe Shuster Awards will be giving out awards to deserving Canadian comics creators. The ceremony will take place in the Back Space, the event space that shares an address with The Comic Book Lounge & Gallery.

This year, Ty is again nominated for Web Comic Creator. Fingers crossed! (Although everyone on the list is so amazing…and we’re both kinda pulling for Attila Adjornay who has been nominated for his beautiful Metaphysical Neuroma). But…win or lose, Ty will be inducted into The Canadian Comic Book Creators Hall of Fame (along with Cy Bell and Edmond Good).

Did this image up a couple years ago so it's missing a few more credits...Batman '66 #2 and #6, Batman '66 Meets The Green Hornet and...more. Many more.

The event starts at 8pm (doors open at 7pm); gathering afterwards to give people a chance to talk and look at some of the artwork from past Shusters. Check the website for information on all the nominees, and bios of the Hall of Fame inductees.

Vast and Flat Bun Toons! YAY!

Dedicated to Wil Wheaton, for reasons that will become obvious...

Dedicated to Wil Wheaton, for reasons that will become obvious…

I have it on solid authority, that this was the ORIGINAL plan for the character…

spiderman of the prairies websize

I promised this one a few months back, and it took me that long to draw it.  Blades of wheat are time consuming.

I’m not drawing Aquaman of the Sahara, though.  We all know the lucky bastard will find a bathtub or something.  That’s how it always goes with him.

Ty the Guy OUT!

Here now, your BONUS Spider-Man of the Prairies moment:

cowboy spidey

Yeee-hah!  I WISH that was a real Spider-Man action figure, but it’s a custom, made by BILL’S CUSTOMS (a man clearly dedicated to customizing the super-hero world, as you can see HERE or by clicking the image above.)  As a former Prairie resident-in-law, thanks for that little bit of bronco ridin’ web-slingin’ fun, Bill!

San Diego Comic Con Memories Bun Toons Yay!

What? Who are you? Where am I? Hello…?

I’m not at San Diego this weekend, even though the rest of the planet seems to be.  Instead, I’ve taken to my bed in Toronto, recovering from some fairly work-intensive weeks with a bout of nasty exhaustion.  (Sorry there wasn’t a BUN TOON yesterday, the flesh is weak.)

But the MIND never stops at Bun Toons Central.  So I’ve let you into the creaky memory storage unit today.  Remember, you cannot open any boxes, and you cannot touch any items.  Whoever has the most money in their pockets can surely own it.  Yuuuup!

I hope those that made it to the West Coast are having a good time.  You’re in my thoughts when I’m not sleeping the day away…because those sleepy thoughts are always about bowling in the nude.

TY THE GUY OUT!

Here now, your BONUS Comic Con moment:

Time to play ARMCHAIR KIRBY! Votes will be tabulated with the latest software and reported back in a timely manner.

Magic Powers Bun Toons YAY!

Look deeply into my eyes, for I know secrets...

Last week’s Bun Toon, I looked back on all my broken promises to myself.  This week, I look forward and promise you all….TOMORROW!!

This might be most most shameless plug ever. (In case I’m not blunt enough, I’ll be working on one of those predictions this year… Self promotion is a sickness.)  See you in the funny papers.

Ty the Guy OUT!

Here now, your BONUS Fortune Teller Comic Book Moment:  The first issue of World’s Finest I ever bought is often cited as the worst story ever to appear in an issue.

I predict you’ll hate it if you read it!

Bun Toons Countdown 2011 – #3. YAY!

This entry into the Top Five is an odd one.  First, it had nothing to do with comic books (though eight out of the top ten Bun Toons did), second, it’s not funny, nor is it meant to be,  and finally, though I wrote it, it’s one of the few Bun Toons this year that I didn’t draw.  Jason Laudadio drew the piece, a wonderfully skilled artist from Toronto and WOW did he knock it out of the park!

It was posted the week that America retired their Space Shuttle program, and that country gave up on putting  human beings in space for the foreseeable future.  This Bun Toon was my comment on it.  A number of news sites following the story of the shuttle’s retirement picked up our contribution to the conversation and it went all viral, as the kids say.

It’s a nice feeling when you do a little heartfelt piece, just to keep the wheels of creativity greased, and tens of thousands of people end up reading it.

Again, round of applause for Jason Laudadio’s art on this story.  Go tell Jason you love him.

As I said before, the Prometheus Toon wasn’t about comic books, so I was very surprised it was popular, but I can never gauge what people out there are going to react to.

AND NOW FOR A BOTTOM FIVE BUN TOON!

BWAH HAH HAH!

Checking in for the failure side of things is a Bun Toon I was really pleased with when I did it, and my buddy Dan Slott called me up afterwards to tell me it was the funniest one I’d ever drawn.   (I have to keep remembering that mentioning the now-world-famous Dan is name dropping nowadays!  HAH!)

Anyway, here’s one that amused me and Slott, but not that many other people.  It’s about the dying media of newspaper comic strips.   Too dead a target, I suppose.

As I child, I would have LOVED to see Wolf’s World in the paper.   Every day, they eat something new.  A cat, a dog, perhaps an orphan or one of their own, the possibilities are endless.

See you tomorrow with the #2 Bun Toon that turned my comments section into the hottest all-star hangout on the internet for a couple of days…that, AND the miserable failure that was my Bun Toons death scene.

Ty the Guy OUT!

Mystery Detective Bun Toons! YAY!

You're probably wondering why I've gathered you all here in the drawing room...

My teenager has been playing a lot of L.A. Noire lately, and I’m going to chalk it up to that.  Should I be pitching this at a network?  It’s both a cop show AND a medical drama.  Add a sassy girl with sharp wits and a smoking bod, and this is a no-brainer for HBO or AMC.

Ty the Guy OUT!

Here now, your bonus Bun Toons Detective Tale:

JOHNNY DESCARTES: EXISTENTIAL PRIVATE EYE!

My wife didn’t find this one funny this morning, so it never got out of the sketch phase.  But she laughs at coma patients, so I was safe with the Bun Toon I went with.

One last note that’s unrelated to Bun Toons:  Family Circus creator Bil Keane passed away this week, and I wanted to say something about it.

It’s been a common right of passage for any young aspiring humorist to look at Keane’s work as a sort of anti-standard of comedy.  When I was in my early twenties, I resented the strip’s success and felt it was almost intentionally trying to irritate me, specifically because of its cloying middle-brow sentiment and lack of any real cleverness.  To my youthful brain, it certainly wasn’t funny.    For the last few months, my fifteen year old son, Taylor had become obsessed with clipping the Family Circus out of the paper and putting the panels on our kitchen fridge every single day – an ironic ritual of showing off what he thought was the ultimately least funny thing on our spinning blue ball in space.   I recognized the impulse, I’d done similar things when I was his age.

But you know what…?  The Family Circus was never meant for cynical, ironic and smart-alec young men to enjoy.   It was for people with families, for young kids and their parents, for sentimental older folks with grown children, and for whomever liked it.  It promised and delivered a gentle portrait of home life for over fifty years, and was read by MILLIONS of people, all of whom count.  That is an astounding achievement of endurance, perseverance and popularity in the mind-numblingly competitive field of cartooning.

You were a legitimate and touching artist, Bil Keane, and a heroic cartoonist.  Well done.

Ty the Guy.

Unseen Sketchbook land. Dredd! Batman! Headless nudes!

Hey internet.  I’m actually drawing something in my lap as I type this, I’m so busy finishing up something that should have been done yesterday, but I wanted to pass along a couple of these images from sketchbooks past.

The school at which I teach (Toronto Cartoonists Workshop) is having a faculty show in a few weeks, and it’s been suggested I put together a sketchbook for the event, since I’m one of the few guys on earth who doesn’t have one available at conventions.

Wife insists we do this, I concede, and much scanning is planned.  So I’m posting a very small sample from just the first scanned book out of the twenty or thirty sketchbooks I have in my studio.   This will take time, in between my other gigs, to sort out anything worth looking in this vast wasteland of nude/figure studies and odd doodles, but I’m told someone might want to look at some of these pages, so I present a few of them before they get collected up in the book.   We’re just at the start of the winnowing process, so I have no idea whether or not any of these pages will make the final cut.

The Dredded Sketchbook begins.

From the nineties, when DC had the rights to Judge Dredd – I was working on a  Dredd pitch right around the time the series ended.  The script was written, or at least plotted, but it got stopped before any art was done.   Dredd figures abound in sketchbook pages of this period, either because I was thinking about him a lot, or because I was hoping to draw the script I was writing, I honestly can’t remember.  All my 90’s sketchbooks have Dredd pages in them somewhere.

Saw a guy wearing this on the history channel and HAD to sketch it before it left my head.  Back in the crusades, apparently, knights would wear candles on their helmets in crown formation, so they could raid the heathen locals at night, and because it was scary as fuck.   It’s not so much the sketch that pleases me about this doodle, but the idea that occurred to me as I was drawing it;  it looked like  a halo, and perhaps that was the actual purpose all along?

The typical thought stream of a sketchbook page.  I’m doing a warm up figure drawing and I see something on the history channel about hand paintings on the outside of caves being a universal image found all over the world, and I start to wonder if it began with bloody hand prints, made by early hunters, and almost without asking it to, my hand draws a sketch of a caveman killing the bunny.   Let’s hope there are no psychiatrists looking in at the blog today.

Speaking of cave-men.

Met this guy in an elevator at a Star Trek convention in Niagara Falls, sketched this in my book as soon as I sat down in the hotel room.  There was something about the crazy Klingon eyes and the double chin that made it all magical to me.

Last year for Christmas, my wife asked me to do a drawing of Batman for a neighbourhood kid as a present.  I treated the gig like any professional job and did three sketches of the idea for approval from an editor in my sketchbook.  (I think my wife stepped into the role).  My editor picked the Batman in the rain one, but I’ve really come to LOVE that dropping cape shot, I think because Batman’s mask is an almost perfect ying/yang balance of black and white in simple shapes.

Here’s the rainy shot in its final form, by the way.

So very Christmas-y.

SATURDAY IS ALWAYS FREE COMICS DAY at ART LAND!

Big day.  It’s our Christmas, and I’m out playing Santa in downtown Toronto at Paradise Comics.  Come visit!

And now, with just a little further ado, we bring you the Saturday Morning Comics.

Oh, those silly space rogues, what will they get into next week?  I wish the hell I knew– who has time to write that far in advance?

(read the previous chapters here)

In the meantime, here’s—

COMIC ARCHEOLOGY 101

This blog was originally set up to scan and sort out all the original art and old unprinted things I’d done in the eleven decades I’ve been in the biz (starting as a ghost inker on “THE YELLOW KID”) .  In my most recent bout of going through  “THE PILE”, I came across some comic strips that I’d done for my high school paper… in COLOUR!  (I have no recollection of  a colour edition of our high school paper, but I remember things about as well as that Dorrie the fish character  from….you know…that movie with the fish– so anything is possible.)

But I scanned ’em, and now you get to laugh at them (for all the wrong reasons at this point) and see where it all began…with no apparent talent whatsoever.  Oh, yes, I was a little influenced by Doonesbury back then.  I was sixteen, and at that age, one’s instinct is to directly steal someone else’s style and skills.  It’s why teen girls love vampire stories–ALL teenagers are vampires in some way, the little shits.

And now, after so much ado, I present, the crappy work of a 16 year old Ty.

It's funny because it's true, I think.

I’m getting all nostalgic for a time when people sat in bars without open carry weapons.

Here’s another one from the days when TV was a broadcast medium.  I might put up more of these cave paintings next week, unless someone stops me with an injunction.  You’ve been warned.

Comedy from back when I had hair on my head.

That’s it for today.  See you back here next week when I figure out a way to have Stavros and Lana escape from certain death, or I ignore it completely and start a new adventure on Venus.  It depends on how much spare time I have to write a GOOD script.  And don’t forget to visit me at PARADISE COMICS today for a free comic book, a free sketch, a free smile and a free curse in VODON-ESE.

Ty the Guy.
