Hop, Hop, and AWAY! BUN TOONS! YAY!

Today's Bun Toon will be the result of exposure to Red Kryptonite and it should wear off in 24 hours.

Today’s Bun Toon will be the result of exposure to Red Kryptonite and it should wear off in 24 hours.

Have you guys checked out the new SUPERGIRL show in CBS this fall?   Too much fun.  It almost makes up for Constantine being cancelled.

Still…if you’re unfamiliar with the MAID OF MIGHT, I’m here to help.

SUPERGIRL in four panels

In my spare time this last month, I’ve been re-reading the Supergirl stories from the Fifties and Sixties in my collection (I have nearly all of ’em).  Wow, what a bizarre ride of sexism and patriarchy it all was back then…just like the prevailing culture.

Thank Rao we’ve moved past all that.

Ty the Guy

Supergirl has a doppelgänger named “Power Girl”, who is from a parallel universe where the inhabitants all have much larger boobs.

Here the two Karas argue about "who wore it sluttier?"

Here the two Karas argue about “who wore it sluttier?”

Strangely enough, the parallel world version of Kara is quite popular as a cosplay outfit.

Speaking of strange, the following two panels, from an issue in 1959, still sort of freaks people out…

super marriage

Then there’s THIS moment.

superwoman

It’s worth noting, that Supergirl is also a doppelgänger for Lois Lane, Lana Lang and a woman named Lesla-Lar from Kandor….all of whom can seamlessly disguise themselves as Kara Z0r-el without make-up or preparation.

Superman has the hots for ALL of ’em at one point or another.

Apparently women were interchangable in the Fifties.

Rather than just looking at the artwork, let’s consider the man we lost this week at 89  years old….

murphy

That’s Murphy Anderson, looking dapper in the ever-present suit.

My middle name is “Murphy” by the way, so I had an EXTRA fondness for the only other person I’ve ever met who shares that moniker.

I really do think that these two comic books have more influence on me than any two comics ever published…

superman 244

This was the first time I saw the “new” Superman of the 70s…Clark and Lois worked for a TV station, and Lois was starting to dress in modern clothes (Jimmy, not so much.)  The story (by Denny O’Neil) seemed more “grown-up” than the previous Superman stories I read.  This seemed like it was “mine”, and not the old fashioned stuff my older brothers used to read.

action 409

I still have my copies of these two issues, though they have long ago lost their covers (and I purchased nice new copies at a convention).  This one also introduced me to my life-long fondness of Nick Cardy (quite a cover, no?)…as it had a Teen Titans reprint found within.

These two comics started me down my path of obsessive collecting, which led to me learning to draw them (like Curt and Murphy if I could), which led me to working in the biz…

…Which led to me eventually taking Murphy’s job after he retired.

swan templeton legion

Yup.  I became Curt Swan’s inker about two years after I met them.  Did it for a while, and it was like nothing I can describe to wake up every morning working your dream job.

Curt Swan and I even co-created ARM FALL OFF BOY, the greatest comic character of all time.

swan templeton arm fall off boy

But enough about me.
Let’s finish off looking at some Swanderson artwork in their prime…from Action Comics #410.  One of those first issues I ever bought, back when I was nine years old….

410 pg 2

410 pg 3

Damn.  Look how good that stuff still is!  Every drop of ink is in the right place.

Thanks for the fantastic ride, Curt and Murphy.  You were both unimaginable treasures of my youth, and you are both unimaginably missed.

It worked with drunk drivers and it worked with smokers.  I propose a campaign of shame.  Let all the gun owners know that WE know they all have small penises.  Let all gun owners know that WE know they’re all cowards.  Let gun owners know that they’re not fit to be with decent people.

Eventually, there might be a few less guns, and a few less dead students.

Batman Day!

So Saturday September 26 2015 is Batman Day! I’ve been invited to spend the day at One Million Comix in downtown Toronto. My current plan is to be at the store roughly 12 – 5pm.

I’ll be signing books (bring your own or buy some at the store), and doing sketches. As it’s a limited period of time, obviously there’s a limit to how many sketches I’ll be able to do…so if anyone knows in advance that they’d like to get a sketchcover, you can send me an email at tybunny@gmail.com. Single figures are $60, two figures are $90, markers and copics.

All covers will be available for pick-up ONLY at the comic store (531 Yonge Street, Toronto) on the day of the event. Payment can be in cash at the convention or you can PayPal me before pickup.

BUN TOON SELL OUTS PART NINE! YAY!

THIS time it's going to be HUGE.

THIS time it’s going to be HUGE.

I’ve talked to the consultants, and everyone assures me it will be fine.

good man goes for broke

Every time they cut off an arm the sales go through the ROOF!  Except for Booster Gold, they reversed that one fairly quickly.  And except for Arsenal, that one didn’t last.  And Aquaman’s arm grew back, so they cut off the OTHER one, but that one’s back now.  And then there’s Lightning Lad (both a lost arm AND a female version of himself with his sister)…they fixed that one a long time ago.

Okay, maybe it only works when they cut off the arms of Marvel characters.  Winter Soldier and Cable do okay.

Breaking News Bun Toons! YAY!

This just in...

This just in…

I wasn’t here last week to clear this up, but I’ve finally pushed my way back onto the internet to tell you all what you think.

Whew.

Broken batgirl toys

For those of us who survived it, the 90s was a time when everyone we admired as heroes were getting raped, maimed, wounded, destroyed, murdered, raped and murdered, and more….all in service of making fantasy super-heroes more “realistic”, the greatest oxymoron in fiction.  We’ve still got echoes of that nowadays, what with DC’s  chopping off the arms of beloved characters, or Marvel killing off of their flagship heroes…but there’s a sense of none of it being permanent lately.  We all KNOW, Wolverine will be back, and Alfred’s missing hand won’t last past the next continuity reboot.

For some reason, though…the atrocities done to female characters left more permanent marks.  Black Canary’s sexual abuse at the hands of Mike Grell created physical and emotional scars that lasted for decades.  Batgirl’s physical and sexual abuse at the hands of Alan Moore and later, the DC editorial staff, landed her in a wheelchair for a generation (while Batman’s trip to a wheelchair lasted a year and has never been mentioned since).

There’s a new crop of fans who weren’t there during the comic character holocaust, and don’t want to know about it.   Especially the female fans, who don’t, as a rule, enjoy the breaking of toys the way we boys often do.

These fans have spoken.   And I’m on their side…

Let’s glue the good toys back together and never discuss this stuff again, shall we?

PS:  I hope I don’t have to explain the difference between editing and censorship on this subject.  I’ve heard a few morons getting confused about that….

Ty the Guy OUT

The ultimate Broken Toys comic book.

The ultimate Broken Toys comic book.  I’m happy to see the misfits smiling.

But does this make you happy to see this  happen to Green Lantern?  (I shouldn’t give the editors at DC any ideas….they have a thing about severed limbs.)

Happy New New Year Bun Toons! YAY!

top five logo 1

Happy New Year everybody (he said, knowing it isn’t)!  Wasn’t last night a blast (probably  not)?

It’s OFFICIALLY the first of the new year,  here at Bun Toon Central, and time for the Most and Least Popular Bun Toons of 2014 to be revealed.

—————————————————————————————————

Our champion of the year was read by far, far more folks than possibly any Bun Toon of all time.  There’s almost no way to tell.  Normally, I use the local webcounter here, and tally up all the links back to determine how many eyeballs landed on my humble bunny funnies, but this little viral monster ended up everywhere online, on everyone’s ELSE’S tumbler, on their website and eventually onto the printed page as a poster (available exclusively at Reno’s Wizard World Comic Convention last year!).  I can’t count up other people’s tumbler numbers, and couldn’t even guess at how many people lifted this Bun Toon whole cloth, so we’re just going to say “lots and lots” and leave it at that.

And it’s all for the love of Mr. Finger…

fingerless batman poster websize

That version above is actually the “cleaned up” version of the strip, which originally ran in a much cruder form, but it was hard to read, and I wasn’t proud of the pastiche style…

The original looked like this:

BATMAN WITHOUT BILL

But who can read that lettering?

Best parts of crusading for Bill The Boy Wonder last year:  Creating awareness of his story, and getting to talk to his granddaughter Athena Finger.  The tide is starting to turn towards justice for Bill’s place in history:  If you go to Batman’s wiki page, it says co-created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger nowadays.  It’s only DC Comics that can’t admit it, but the part of fandom that isn’t controlled by an iron-clad legal document that keeps Finger from getting his due credit, is happy to embrace Batman’s other papa.

For last week's Bill Finger Google Doodle Campaign, click here

Finally.  Batman fans have been given the Finger.

————————————————————————————————–

Time for hilarious failure.

When they decided to kill off Wolverine, right after bringing Peter Parker back from the dead, slightly after the return of Jean Gray, but after the murder of Professor X, which was followed by the return of Nightcrawler…I started to think there was no choice…at least if I wanted my Bun Toons to catch on.

dead bunny websize version

That’s Ortiz, the Hispanic Pool Boy in the last panel, a beloved ethnic slur that showed up in the strip a few times over the summer.  He wasn’t popular either.

That strip up there was only the SECOND least read Bun Toon of the year…the honour of being dead LAST was earned the very next week when I decided to keep up with this silly Dead Bunny Saga…and NO ONE showed up to play along.

dead bunny part 2

The Pepsi drinking version of the Bunny (with the backwards signature on his shirt) hosted Bun Toons for the rest of the summer, but I quickly stopped making reference to his being an evil twin as no one seemed to notice or care.

Sigh.

Eventually, I simply put the signature on the shirt the right way ’round again in September, and the readership boycott drew to a close.

I thought it was a funny “take” on the industry’s fondness for slaughtering its heroes, but I’ve never been so wrong in my instincts before.

Which means, the epic, twenty-eight part “Return of the Bunny” will never see the light of day.  It’s a pity, because I would have brought back the Watcher, Gwen, Jor-El and Lara, and Jack Kirby in successive chapters.

———————————————————————————————

See you NEXT week for the start of Bun Tooning 2015!  (No entry tomorrow, I don’t want to overstay my welcome with six Bun Toons in a row!)  What’s coming up will surprise you, because it will surprise me.  I never know what these little stories will be about until Saturday morning.

Ty the Guy OUT for 2014!
