C’est la vie Bun Toons!

Bonjour, mes amis. Le lapin est ici!

bernie paris final

I was at a convention last week, and couldn’t BUN TOON closer to the news of Bernie’s death, but he was such a towering figure in our industry, and in life, I had to mark his passing, even if I was a few days late.

I could go on and on about how skilled Bernie was with a brush, or with a composition, but if you knew his name, you already knew of his staggeringly impressive and inspiring abilities.  I use his Frankenstein illustrations as examples of what’s possible in the inking classes I teach.  I use his Swamp Thing pages as examples of what’s possible in the layout classes I teach, and I use his House of Mystery comics as examples of what entertains the hell out of me when I just want to read a great story.

The world of comics in general, spooky comics in specific, and the planet Earth itself, was made a better place by your being in it, sir.

Now, the inter-connected world we currently live in is a marvellous place.  Some years ago, I told this story of my day in Paris with Bernie and Scott (and Neal Adams, who was also at the bookstore, but wasn’t part of the rest of the day) in an interview, and discovered the man to whom the original sketch was given still had it, and he was happy to scan the image and send it to me.

So here it is….given back to me digitally over a decade later.

As I said, the original head-shot was done swiftly with little sense of its fateful final disposition.  It’s simple – but there it is, my one and only collaboration with Bernie and Scott.

Paris turns out to be magical after all.

Some day, when I’m not dealing with raw emotions, I’ll probably find a way to post the clever but snide religious satires.

Not this morning, though.

Potentially Obtuse Bun Toons

We’re all enraged this week.

Let’s make the rage rational.

charlie hebdo

When I first heard of the Paris shootings, my first thought was horror, and my second thought was “…some Muslim cab driver is going to get knifed over this later in the week”.

My Third Thought:  I wanted to reprint every Charlie Hebdo cover that ever featured Mohammed on my blog, just to spit into the eye of those monstrous religious extremists that feel they can control OTHER PEOPLE’S free speech.

Fuck religious people who want to control you.  Fuck religion.

But some of those covers were clearly racist, and I realized that to feature those Charlie Hebdo covers again as a knee-jerk reaction would also be spitting in the eye of every other Muslim, just because of the action of a small group of psychotics that do not represent them or their religion.    And I cannot, in good conscience, punch back at every brown skinned middle eastern person of faith because I’m enraged.

I still drew Mohammed up there. It was part of the story so fuck fear.

And fuck labels that spread the blame to an entire culture.  No one deserves them.

Unless all you white protestants are all willing to apologize daily for Custer and the Klan and the Green River Killer.

The “Charlie” in CHARLIE HEBDO is a reference (partly) to Charlie Brown.

Today, as the bonus moment:  My favourite Charlie Brown strip of all time.  It’s useful information to folks who believe this world was formed with a religious plan.

Let’s never forget, that the most religious member of the Peanuts gang (Linus) is the one who cannot let go of his security blanket.
